Cold calling vs cold email vs LinkedIn: which B2B channel actually wins?

Most B2B outbound teams spread effort across three channels: cold email, LinkedIn, and the phone. They're not the same thing. Each does something the others can't.

Reach and response

Cold email is cheap and it scales, but response is the problem. Backlinko's analysis of cold email found around 96.6% of messages get no reply, so the conversation never starts. LinkedIn connection notes are answered less than 3% of the time, and the platform limits how many you can send. A phone call reaches a decision maker directly, and a good share of senior buyers pick up.

Speed to a decision

A cold email sequence takes four to seven emails to earn a reply, and 42% of replies only come after a follow up. A LinkedIn only sequence takes five to seven messages. A single phone call can get you a yes or a no, and book the meeting there and then.

Two way qualification

Email and LinkedIn are one way until the other side replies. A call is two way from the first hello. You can ask questions, handle objections, and qualify the opportunity in real time. That's the difference between a booked meeting and a name on a list.

Which channel is getting stronger

Cold email open rates are down around 23% since 2023. LinkedIn reply rates to connection notes are down around 37% in twelve months. Cold calling's industry success rate rose about 17% in a year. The channel most teams have walked away from is the one getting better.

How to use them together

The best outbound stacks use all three, but the phone does the work that books the meeting. Email and LinkedIn warm up the account, and the call closes the conversation.
